Vardaman Bundren

Vardaman is the youngest of the Bundrens, but the effects of his family have hit him just as much as anybody else. I've found many arguments about his age, but most people believe he is anywhere from 6-10 years old. Nonetheless, he is incredibly confused by his mother's death. This is where the fish symbolism comes in. First, he finds the fish just at the time his mother dies. When he shows it to Anse and Vernon, it is wiggling in the dirt, gasping for air. To Vardaman, this is what is also happening to his mother. Later, when she is placed in her coffin, it is as if she has no air to breathe, so he drills holes in the sides to give her "gills." Lastly, when her coffin spills into the river, Vardaman fully believes his mother really is a fish. The confusion in this character really comes out in his childish diction. I've even seen arguments that Vardaman is retarded because of his family's influence and acts this way accordingly. Any way you look at it, Vardaman symbolizes the effects of death and hard family life on a child.
